| Good for learning your English Grammar weaknessIf you are a lower level English language speaker, then this "Developing Skills for the TOEIC Test" is a good book to begin studying. If you have scored above 600 on the TOEIC, this book will not help you build your skills--instead, get "Barron's Essential Words for the TOEIC" or "Target TOEIC".
STRUCTURE:
It is divided into 13 Units--each Unit focuses on different grammar issues you WILL find on the TOEIC. (Examples: Comparatives and Superlatives, Relative Clauses, Conditionals). Each Unit has a quiz at the end. After those units, there is 1 complete Practice Test, and at the end of the book is a great Appendix, with short (one-page) explanations of the grammar used in Units 1-13.
POSITIVES:
The Appendix(!), which explains the grammar used in Units 1-13. The grammar explanations are simple; and while they are not complete (the explanations do not cover the more complex grammar sometimes found in English), the explanations give enough useful information for lower-level ESL students to build their understanding of English grammar.
Units 1-13 focus on the most common grammar that ESL students get wrong. They are great for learning what English grammar you need to improve.
NEGATIVES:
There are not enough practice questions to prepare you for Test Day. Because you know what kind of grammar is being tested in Units 1-13, it is easy to focus on spotting those grammar problems in the questions. This book would be greatly improved if they had more Review Quizzes that combined several or all the Grammar Units.
There is no section to help you improve you grammar skills. The "Practice Makes Perfect" series of English grammar and vocabulary are good books to get to improve your English grammar!
Again, if you normally score above 600 on the TOEIC, this book will not be useful.
